Action Research Project Explanation

Action Research Plan:

Description:  How to reduce to teacher burnout in order to keep turnover at the high school level to a minimum.
Target Population: All teachers in high school, but we really want to concentrate on the teachers in the zero to six years experience range. This research will directly affect the teachers, students, as well as the high school administration.
Sample Selection: The sample population to be included in this project will be four teachers from each grade level. We will have two teachers from the ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelve grade levels with zero to six years of experience. We will also have two teachers from the ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelve grade levels with ten plus years of experience.
Rationale: The rationale for this is to find out any information or workshops that we can conduct to reduce teacher burnout, and to keep our turnover of younger teachers to a minimum. This will also allow our students to gain a trust and become comfortable with teachers that they are used to seeing. From and administrative standpoint, it will help us save money and time re-teaching our policies to new teachers.
Conducting Research:   I plan to interview each of the sixteen teachers that are selected. I want of focus on any ideas or techniques that they may have to help reduce this problem. I also plan on conducting two walkthroughs in each of their classrooms. This will allow me to see their teaching strategies as well as their classroom mangment skills. I will then use all this information to make my recommendations to my site supervisor.

  1. Hello Richard,
I find it very interesting that you are doing your Action Research on teacher burnout. I believe my district might face the same problem at the high school level (I teach elementary).
There are many things outside the school that can contribute to decrease teacher burnout, such as social life, family, physical activity...Are you planning to incorporate these elements?
