Infrastructure

The basic idea behind the infrastructure part of the plan is to have all Texas schools with up to the date technology. The emphasis on current technology is designed for collaboration between other schools for an improved learning experience. Current trends for Texas and the country have been quite encouraging. All indications are that everyone is making a great effort to improve their infrastructure with technology. While some states and districts are obviously a bit more advanced most statistics point to improvement across the board. I believe the best way to continue to improve this area is by requiring districts to purchase up to date technology and require teachers to use it in their classrooms. This will prepare their students for real world applications when they graduate.
I agree with many of the states recommendations for improvement. I was curious about the establishment of affordable and accessible wireless networks. I am puzzled by how they are going to try and control the price for wireless networks. This seems like a good idea in theory, but I do not believe that they have the power to control pricing of wireless connections. My idea would be to get with all major wireless carriers and see what a state wide price would be. This would at least give each district an opportunity to purchase their services. I also have to question how they plan on establishing 24/7 access for parents and the community. The only way to do this is purchase a computer for each family which would not seem feasible. Overall the recommendations of this are very good, but should more in depth thinking should take place before they jump into it.

Update Action Research Plan

Action Planning Template
Goal: The objective of this action research is to identify the courses of teacher burnout and how to prevent teachers from leaving the educational field.  Research will help determine the factors that contribute to teacher burnout.  The intended income is to identify strategies that will help teachers posses the necessary coping skills through instructional strategies, classroom discipline, and time management to handles the stress and factors that contribute to burnout.  As a result of this research, my goal is to keep teachers motivated and in the profession thus reducing the turnover rate.
Action Steps(s):
Person(s) Responsible:
Timeline: Start/End
Needed Resources
Evaluation
  1. Survey teachers about burnout and what causes burnout for them.
  2. Survey one other district to see what they do to prevent burnout.
Richard Robinson
August 2011-
September 2011
Create a survey of relevant questions.
Observe trends in teacher responses.  Identify any areas that may be considered as factors for burnout.
2. Identify strategies that help with instructional delivery, classroom discipline, and time management.

Strategies

Handouts outlining the main ideas of each strategy.
All of these strategies are designed to alleviate stress that contributes to burnout.  Hopefully, teachers will avoid encountering the factors responsible for burnout.
3. Meet with teachers at the end of each six weeks to discuss any frustrations or situations that may increase chances for burnout.

End of each six weeks.

September 2011 – May 2012
Round table discussion questions generated by teachers.
Use this information to determine the “risks” that increase the chances of burnout and make adjustments to alleviate the effect of the stressful environment.
4.  Follow up survey: Question teachers about the effectiveness of the strategies and if they helped alleviate the effects of burnout.
Richard Robinson
May 2012
Create survey of relevant questions.
Observe if there were any changes in teacher attitude and note the strategies that were effective and ineffective.

After a long visit with Mr. Reeves we made one major change. He suggested that I visit another school district to see what they do to prevent teacher burnout and turnover.

Action Research Project Explanation

Action Research Plan:

Description:  How to reduce to teacher burnout in order to keep turnover at the high school level to a minimum.
Target Population: All teachers in high school, but we really want to concentrate on the teachers in the zero to six years experience range. This research will directly affect the teachers, students, as well as the high school administration.
Sample Selection: The sample population to be included in this project will be four teachers from each grade level. We will have two teachers from the ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelve grade levels with zero to six years of experience. We will also have two teachers from the ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelve grade levels with ten plus years of experience.
Rationale: The rationale for this is to find out any information or workshops that we can conduct to reduce teacher burnout, and to keep our turnover of younger teachers to a minimum. This will also allow our students to gain a trust and become comfortable with teachers that they are used to seeing. From and administrative standpoint, it will help us save money and time re-teaching our policies to new teachers.
Conducting Research:   I plan to interview each of the sixteen teachers that are selected. I want of focus on any ideas or techniques that they may have to help reduce this problem. I also plan on conducting two walkthroughs in each of their classrooms. This will allow me to see their teaching strategies as well as their classroom mangment skills. I will then use all this information to make my recommendations to my site supervisor.

Week 2 Research Observations

I found that three administrators that I talked to all had different ideas on what to research. Their ideas were all what they thought was important to their programs. I discussed this with  an assistant principal, special education director, and an athletic director. They all had very good ideas, but all their ideas were realated to their fields. I found that to be very interesting. The AP wanted me to look at teacher turnover, the special ed director wanted me to concentrate on reducing our percentage of students labled special ed, and our athletic director wanted me to find ways to improve the girls side of athletics. I decided to go with the AP's suggestion and research the turnover in our high school. I will look in to this and report back later.
